The Truck He Left Behind
My dad passed away in 2014. He left behind a lot of things, including his red truck — orange-ish now, the way old paint goes after enough years.
We used to go camping in that truck when I was a kid. I always loved it. Not just the look of it — the way it sounded, the way it smelled. Those are the parts you don't really get to keep.
Why a Crawler, and Why the LC80 Came First
I only got into RC crawlers recently. What pulled me in was seeing one that looked similar enough to that truck — close enough to bring something back.
Funny enough, I didn't start there. I went with an LC80 instead, because I also like Toyotas. That's how I ended up in this hobby: one truck from my past, one brand I already trusted.
Then the FCX18 II F-100 Arrived
Then FMS released the FCX18 II Ford F-100. It's close enough — I had to buy it.
For anyone who has spent years looking for the right starting point, that's usually how it goes. It isn't a spec decision. You see it, and you know.
The Build Plan: Matching the Trailer
Now I'm excited to make it look even more similar to my dad's truck. I also picked up a trailer, and I want to make it look like the one we used to have.
That's the part I'm looking forward to most — not the build itself, but what it'll look like when it's done.
